About the Contest
The National Park Service (NPS) is looking for striking, high-quality digital images that highlight the beauty of nature within the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Photographers are invited to submit entries that showcase the park’s breathtaking views, diverse wildlife, and the recreational opportunities available to park visitors. This is your chance to capture the essence of one of America's most beautiful national parks through your lens.
Key Guidelines
The photo contest is open to all photographers, except NPS employees and their immediate families. However, to ensure that the entries meet the standards of the contest, there are specific guidelines that photographers need to follow:
Eligibility and Entry Limitations
- Entries are open to all photographers, but NPS employees and their immediate families are not eligible to participate.
- Photographers can submit up to two photos for consideration.
- Photos must be taken within the boundaries of the Big South Fork NRRA to be eligible.
Original Work
- All submitted photos must be the original work of the photographer, and the photographer must own the copyright to the image.
- Submitted images must not have been previously published or sold.
- Entries that do not adhere to these guidelines will be disqualified.
Alterations and Digital Manipulation
- Acceptable alterations include adjustments to color, contrast, brightness, sharpness, and cropping. Additionally, techniques like High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging and stitching for landscape photos are acceptable.
- Unacceptable alterations include creating composites (combining multiple images), adding or removing objects from the scene, or using digital effects that alter the natural appearance of the photo.
- The goal is to maintain the integrity of the scene as it was captured in its natural state. If you're using digital effects, ensure that the photo reflects the scene in its original form.
People in Photos
- Photographs can include people, but they must not be present in the Flora & Fauna category, which focuses exclusively on plants and animals in their natural habitat.
Photo Submission
- Entries must be digital and submitted via a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive. Please note that these submission formats will not be returned.
- Each photo file must be named in the following format: lastname_firstname_title_category (e.g., Smith_John_Sunset_Landscape).
- The image must not contain any markings like watermarks, copyright stamps, or logos.
Model Release Forms
- If your photograph contains recognizable people, you must submit a model release form along with your photo to grant permission for the use of their image.
Categories for Submission

4. Kentucky Landscapes
- For photographers in Kentucky, this category highlights the expansive views and dramatic landscapes of the Kentucky portion of the Big South Fork NRRA. From rolling hills to river valleys, the Kentucky landscapes provide a perfect backdrop for stunning nature photography.
5. Recreation
- This category focuses on the park’s recreational opportunities. Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, or horseback riding, this category captures people enjoying outdoor activities within the park.
6. Tennessee Landscapes
- For photographers in Tennessee, this category highlights the beauty of the Tennessee portion of the Big South Fork NRRA. The breathtaking landscapes of forests, rivers, and rock formations in this area offer endless inspiration for photographers.
7. Youth
- This category is for photographers under 18 years of age. Youth photographers can submit their photos in any of the above categories, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for young talent to gain recognition.
Submission Process
Step-by-Step Guide to Submitting Your Entry
Prepare Your Photos
- Ensure that your photos meet the contest’s technical specifications. The minimum recommended size for exhibition prints is 11” x 14”, but larger images are also acceptable. Keep in mind that low-resolution photos may not produce quality prints for exhibition purposes.
Complete the Entry Form
- Download the official Contest Entry Form and fill it out carefully. Each entry must be accompanied by a completed form with all required information.

Deadline
- All entries must be submitted by July 15, 2025. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Selection & Exhibition Process
After the submission deadline, the contest organizers will begin the selection process. Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:
